Call For Programming Committee

PROGRAMMING-COMMITTEE-5-500x500.png

*** PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED***

Our 13th annual festival is coming up June 18th – 21st 2020 and we’re looking for people to help us build and shape our programme.

For many years, we’ve been mindful of bringing people together in ways that challenge the music industry standards in Nova Scotia. In efforts to decentralize the ways that our programme is curated, we are inviting members in our local community to help us explore new corners, listen to new ideas, and amplify other voices. Compensation for committee members includes: an honorarium, access to all OBEY events and delicious snacks.

The committee will consist of three members of the public and one board member, Nik Basset. The committee will meet in consultation with the festival’s Creative Director, Andrew Patterson.

The committee will meet five times, for two hours each meeting, between January and May 2020. Outside of these meetings, committee members will be expected to listen independently to artist submissions and communicate through an online platform (to be chosen collectively). Five meetings, online communication, and independent listening hours will require approximately 18 hours of your time over a five month period. Members are appointed for one year with the option to renew their position the following year to a maximum of three years.

The primary responsibilities of the committee are to act as advisors on programming elements including: format, community connections, venue and space considerations, and assessment of artist submissions.

We’ll start our time together with introductions and to set intentions for the ways we want to work together within this committee over the five months leading up to the festival. The following three meetings will be advisory where we’ll assess artist submissions and provide programming guidance to the Creative Director. During our final meeting, we’ll reflect on the process, write a short statement for the program guide, and conclude our time together.

We’re looking for a wide range of perspectives and experiences, individuals who are passionate about our vision, and people who are enthusiastic to bring their ideas and voice to the table.

Applications are open to all art and music creators/organizers/lovers willing to partake in this committee and shape our next festival. However, we want to include voices with varying perspectives, identities, experiences and practices. Therefore, applicants are welcomed to self-identify in any way that is important to their identity – a non exhaustive list follows: BIPOC/racialized/person of colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, disabled, a member of a faith based community, etc.

As compensation for their time, knowledge and energy, committee members will receive a $200 honorarium and access to all shows and programs during their time on the committee. For each meeting, we’ll provide snacks, plus transportation and childcare as needed.

** Submitting to this year’s festival as an artist means that you’re ineligible for participation in the programming committee **

To apply, send a brief note outlining your interest, relevant experience, and intentions with regards to your participation to our Board Liaison, Nik Basset (board@obeyconvention.com).

Deadline for expressions of interest is Tuesday, December 10th at midnight AST. Applications will be assessed by the board in consultation with its creative and executive directors.

Looking Forward,

TEAM “OBEY”
